Campus Shuttle

This service is designed to assist Hillsdale College students with transportation between campus and Detroit Airport, or Jackson train and bus stations. This service is offered primarily around major break periods in the College’s academic calendar. Each shuttle trip should be coordinated by the traveling student and the Fleet and Shuttle Department with as much advance notice as possible (shuttle runs are often contingent upon driver and vehicle availability). See the shuttle policy details below.  

Shuttle service destinations include:

  • Detroit Metro Airport (DTW)

  • Jackson, Michigan train and bus stations

*Shuttle service is reserved for current or incoming students of Hillsdale College and is not intended for parents or family of students, or Hillsdale College employees.

To reserve shuttle service, a student should be prepared to provide the following:

  1. Departure or arrival date

  2. Airline

  3. Flight number

  4. Flight departure or arrival time (at Detroit)

  5. Student account number

  6. Student cell phone number

  • Availability

    Traditionally, shuttle service is provided during:

    • Beginning and end of the academic year (this includes new students entering Hillsdale College in August, 2023)

    • Fall break

    • Thanksgiving recess

    • Christmas break

    • Spring break

    • Non-traditional service: In the case of a death or major emergency in a student’s immediate family (such trips are approved by the Dean’s office.)

  • Hours of Service

    Shuttle service is provided for flight arrival (to Detroit) or departure (from Detroit) times between 9am and 8pm. Any student with a scheduled flight arrival or departure outside of these times should request a shuttle the day prior or day after his/her flight (i.e. a student with a 5am flight departure on Wednesday will need to request a shuttle for Tuesday evening and stay overnight in an airport hotel, or a student with an 11pm flight arrival on Saturday would need to stay in a hotel overnight and ride a shuttle to Hillsdale on Sunday). The Hillsdale College Fleet and Shuttle Department will endeavor to accommodate flight delays due to weather or airline maintenance on an individual situation basis.

Additional Information

  • Payment: The shuttle cost is charged to the student’s Hillsdale College account.

    • $55 one way to/from the Detroit Airport

    • $40 one way to/from the Jackson train or bus stations.

  • Cancellation: Any shuttle reservation must be canceled at least one business day before a scheduled trip, or the applicable full one-way shuttle fee will be charged.

  • Flight Delays or changes: If a student’s flight is canceled or delayed:

    • During work hours, please notify a member of the Fleet and Shuttle Department at jnovak@hillsdale.edu or by calling (517) 607-2493/2497

    • After hours or during weekends, please notify the Fleet and Shuttle Department at the cell phone number provided in the student’s shuttle confirmation email

  • Shuttle stop location, Hillsdale College: All students are picked up and/or dropped off at the Dow Center main (north) entrance.

  • Shuttle stop location, Detroit airport:

    • When dropped off at the Detroit airport, students will be taken to the Ground Transportation area from where they may walk to flight departures.

    • When arriving at DTW, students will meet the College van at Ground Transportation just outside baggage claim, unless otherwise directed by the shuttle driver or the Hillsdale College transportation team.

    • During peak travel times for students, the College may reserve a conference room at a hotel near the Detroit Airport. If applicable, students will receive further, specific information about how to meet the College shuttle at a hotel.

  • Baggage limits: For safety and comfort, students will be allowed only two (2) standard size pieces of luggage and one (1) carry-on. No boxes or other oversized luggage will be allowed. UPS service is available at the Fowler Maintenance Building for additional luggage.
