Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset my password?

Go to account.hillsdale.edu and choose “change your password”.  For further assistance, call the ITS Helpdesk at 517-607-2566 Mon-Fri 8am – 4pm EST

How do I gain Parent Proxy access/CFFS?

  • Go to selfservice.hillsdale.edu and enter your username and password.
Click on your students' name, not yours.

  • If you get the message “You do not have access to any menus on this page.”

  • Click the Sign-Out button and choose the Change Proxy User option

  • This allows you to click on yourself (labeled as You) or your child. You need to click on your child. This will allow access to their account based on the access permissions your child granted to your proxy (financial aid, bill pay information, etc.)

  • If you do not see any options after selecting your student's account, your child has not given you full access and must modify Proxy access.

  • CFFS is under Financial information

What laptops do you recommend for incoming students?

Hillsdale College does not recommend specific laptop models, but the information below provides a good overview of basic laptop features to consider.

Laptop Considerations:
- Processor: I highly recommend getting an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor.  Getting the fastest processor available within your budget will extend the life of the laptop.

 - Screen Size: A larger screen makes things easier to look at and gives you a bigger "desktop" area.  As the screen size increases, though, the overall size and weight of the laptop increases as well.  Your son or daughter should carefully consider how they expect to use the laptop when deciding on a specific screen size.  Several students over the last several years chose a large screen size (17 inches) because they wanted a “desktop replacement” laptop, but found the laptop too big to be easily moved back and forth across campus.

 - Storage Drive: In many ways the performance of the laptop's storage drive is more important than the processor speed.  We recommend a solid state drive (SSD) instead of a traditional hard drive.  The size of the storage drive depends on how much information (files, music, pictures, videos, etc.) your son or daughter may want to keep, but we recommend no less than 500 GB.

- RAM (internal memory): We recommend getting at least 16GB of RAM in a laptop, and strongly suggest getting the 16GB RAM in a single RAM stick if possible.

 - CD/DVD Drives: Most laptops no longer come with CD/DVD drives, but external CD/DVD drives are available if needed.

- Warranty: If possible (and if your budget will allow it), choose a warranty that provides "on-site" service.  That means the laptop doesn't have to be sent away to be fixed if your son or daughter has a problem.  The length of the warranty comes down to personal preference and your overall budget.  The price definitely goes up as the warranty period gets longer.

 - Software: The only software we generally recommend is Microsoft Office.  Having Microsoft Office isn't absolutely necessary, but it makes sending files to professors and/or other students much easier.  Hillsdale College students can download and install Microsoft Office for free once their Hillsdale e-mail address / account has been activated.

- External Hard Drive or Large Flash DriveIt is critical that students back up their data on a regular basis.  Their coursework can be stored in space available to them on Box which the College provides, but music and photos need to backed up elsewhere.  It is important that students realize that data doesn’t truly exist until it exists in more than one location.

For specific Dell pricing information, go to www.delluniversity.com.  Once you’re there you can browse for specific models and see Dell’s educational pricing.

For Apple pricing information, go to www.apple.com/store.  Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “Shop for College” link in the For Education section.

Please know you don't have to limit yourself to Dell and Apple.  We deal primarily with Dell and Apple and know the most about them, but every major laptop brand is represented on campus.

Please call or e-mail me if you have further questions about a laptop purchase.  I'm happy to help you in whatever way I can.

I am unable to access email while studying abroad/in another country.

To avoid service disruptions while traveling outside the US, please email the ITS Helpdesk (helpdesk@hillsdale.edu) with:
•           The name of the country(s) you will be traveling to
•           When you plan to arrive
•           When you plan to return
•           If you will need access to anything other than email

**NOTE** If you believe your password will expire during your trip or over the summer, please take a moment and change it before leaving campus. This can be done by pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL on a campus Windows computer or visiting https://account.hillsdale.edu on your personal computer. This could save you from loss of connectivity and some level of frustration.

I changed my name, and need to update my email:

Students must first work with the Dean’s office or Registrar’s office for their name change.  After the name has been updated by Dean’s/Registrar, ITS can update the user name and email address. Email helpdesk@hillsdale.edu.

Hillsdale Go App is not working.

The Hillsdale Go app has been retired, and a replacement is expected in Fall 2024. In the meantime, here are some helpful links to bridge the gap between apps.

Stay tuned as the College works with the app vendor to launch the new app in Fall 2024!

I got a new phone and need to update MFA/Authentication app.
