Security Office

The Security Department consists of more than 20 full- and part-time employees providing 24/7 coverage. They bring a variety of skills from the disciplines of law enforcement, emergency medical, and security with over 350 years of combined experience. Hillsdale College Security Officers are not sworn law enforcement officers, but they do work cooperatively with municipal, county, and state police agencies. All personnel are provided a variety of equipment to assist in the performance of their duties. Staff members are uniformed so as to differentiate themselves from other College staff.

Security personnel respond to a variety of requests, and regularly patrol the campus residence halls, buildings, and grounds. Part-time security personnel serve as party advisors at properly registered events. Along with other College officials, the Security Department is responsible for enforcing College policies, rules, and regulations.

Vehicle Registration

  • Student Vehicle Registration

All Hillsdale College students are required to register any vehicle they bring to Hillsdale with the Security Department. The registration of motor vehicles assists the Security Department with accurate identification of vehicles parked on or nearby campus, providing better service and safety for students, faculty and staff. The yearly fee for registering a student vehicle, whether the student lives on campus or off campus, is $50. Students are required to register their vehicles before classes begin. In the event that a student must bring his or her vehicle to campus later in the semester, he or she is to register the vehicle immediately online at parking.hillsdale.edu.

  • Parking Sticker

A vehicle is not properly registered until an issued sticker is permanently attached, as prescribed. Stickers will be available for pick up at the Security Office. If the office is locked, please call Patrol at (517) 398-1522 to arrange a pick up. The issued sticker will be adhered to the driver’s side front window above the vehicle identification number and must be clearly visible from the outside. Note: All student parking stickers expire at the end of June each year, and re-registration begins before each fall semester.

Charges for Unregistered and Improperly Parked Vehicles: Students will be assessed a $75 charge for an unregistered vehicle on campus property. Parking violations are $25. So, if a student parked his unregistered vehicle in an improper lot, the charges would be $100. The College reserves the right to immobilize or to tow vehicles on its property.

The Rave Guardian App is a user input app that has two main function. First it allows direct communication to campus security and select offices for emergency use. Second it allows you to select a guardian from your contacts to be notified of and also follow you on a google map in real time when you are walking alone and if you feel uncomfortable. If you do not arrive to your destination and turn the timer off it will send them an alert to check on you. It also has a direct button for 911 that allows them to track you in real time in an emergency.

Download the free app RAVE Guardian. You will be asked for your phone number, then enter your Hillsdale College email, select Hillsdale College as the organization and follow the prompts. Set the permissions to “Allow Always” this opens the mapping only when you initiate the call or request.

Emergency Preparedness and Communications System

Key administrators record a voice message, write an e-mail, and/or write a text message. As with any communication vehicle, it is important to combine voice, text-messaging, and e-mail to better ensure effective communication. In all, the multi-modal service helps us reach out to students and staff via voice messages to home and cell phones; text messages to cell phones, PDAs and other text-based devices (text messaging fees apply according to individual phone plans); and written messages to e-mail accounts (College e-mail and personal).

Two types of messages can be sent. One is a Community Message that is used for weather-related school closings. Community Messages are sent to the primary and secondary phone numbers the student or employee has indicated in their contact information. The other is an Emergency Message that would be sent if there were a campus emergency. Emergency Messages are sent to all phone numbers the student or employee has listed in their contact information.

Contact information may be entered/updated by accessing the Insurance and Emergency Contact Information link on the student portal. It is important to keep phone numbers current in the event a message is sent.

Please list each phone type once and a telephone number once. For example, list a cell number as a cell number only. Listing a cell number as both a cell number and a home number creates an error in which one or both will be excluded until corrected by the administrator. The same is true if two home phone numbers are listed even though each one is a different number.
