  • Summer Reading Information

During the first few days of your arrival, we will do all in our power to welcome you and to form our partnership with you and with your parents.

One part of that involves some lectures by our professors, and one by Dr. Arnn. In preparation for this, we ask you to read two things. The first is a particular biography of George Washington. It is an examination of the character of this man, whose character shone as few have done. Before you are finished at Hillsdale, you will learn much about this conception of character.

The other book is related. It is the best translation of one of the greatest books ever written, The Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle. You will probably find this book challenging. We suggest that you read the Introduction, which is a fine thing, and also Book I before your arrival here.

  • Honor Code Introduction

We were made to talk with each other, to reason together, to learn from one another. We, therefore, take the enterprise of education, of teaching and learning, as serious business. A liberal arts education is a high thing. At Hillsdale you will sit in small classes, and you and your fellow students will be vital to what takes place in them. Outside of class you will work and eat, train and compete, think and study, laugh and joke, worship and pray together. This common action will occur in an atmosphere of respect, high courtesy, and warm affection each for the other, where all are treated alike. The activity is grounded in what we have in common—our humanity—and it is inseparable from the most important thing you have come here to do.
